Gleocapsa Magma is usually the first sign that a roof needs cleaned. This is the staining of your roof that shows up in a dark/blackish color. This algae feeds on the shingles and creates a barrier for other organic growth, such as moss and lichen. Moss and lichen can cause damage to you roof by actually rooting into the granules of your shingles. I advise, if your roof is five years old, have it looked at. It's best to maintain your roof to achieve the 30 year life span out of your shingles.
